Welcome to tanks.brightsoo.com!  This is a site dedicated to Wii Tanks (what is it?), mostly in the form of strategy guides and video captures (for those who haven’t reached the higher missions in the game but want to see them).  To see more what this site is all about and why I made it, see About This Site.

Missions beyond 20 are randomized, except for the 8 milestone missions 30, 40, …, 100.  Therefore, below are screenshots for missions 1 to 20, plus the 8 milestone missions, with links to the corresponding video captures and misison-specific strategy guides where available.

Randomized Missions

Each of the “randomized” missions feature a battlefield randomly picked from an earlier mission, which may be a milestone mission.  Interestingly though, a few milestone missions, such as mission 20, are never picked.  Furthermore, also randomized is the mix of enemy tank types and their initial placements.  However, one thing is never randomized – the number of enemy tanks in each mission is pre-determined and never changes.

In this article I’ll talk about some general techniques in this game as well as some general strategies.  They have helped me reach Mission 100,  and I hope they’ll help you too!  (Your mileage may vary…)  Since techniques are vital to carrying out any strategies you have, we’ll talk about techniques first.  (Scroll down for general strategies, or for mission-specific strategies see List of Missions.)

Techniques:

  1. Lead the enemy tank, i.e. aim at where it is going instead of where it is at. This is the most basic technique next to aiming directly at your opponent.  It is effective in the most basic of circumstances, i.e. you’re trying to destroy a moving tank.  Obviously, this doesn’t apply to stationary tanks. Long overdue, I know!

 

This mission always begins with the teal tank directly opposite you firing at you.  So I typically move up immediately.  I would stop momentarily just before crossing the upper barricade, and fan out all five rounds of shells from the upper barricade to the lower one, then move up above the upper baricade for protection.  Those five rounds will typically take out at least one of the tanks, three if you’re lucky.

For any remaining teal tanks, just apply the usual tactic for teal tanks.

In the process, watch out for rebounding shells from the innocent-looking grey tanks.  Due the wide gap between the barricades and the surrounding side walls, shells can rebound at a steep angle and reach you deep behind the barricades.   This happened at right about the middle of the above video.  Luckily, I was well on my way to the other end of the barricade.

 

Mission 13 is not a difficult level – the green tanks that made their debut in Mission 12 are taking a day off – but it’s no picnic either, due to the fact that you have 3 yellow tanks (for which I expressed my distaste here) and 3 teal ones (which become a real threat only because you’re distracted by the yellow ones).

There are several possible strategies to tackle this level, which is another way of saying they aren’t vital for survival.  😉  But here’s one that can be used to beat the level systematically:

Strategy: Stay on the left side, be constantly moving up and down (where possible) to evade missiles from the teal tanks, and take out the yellow tanks first.  Most likely, the teal tanks will stay on the right side.

Tactic: Start out like the video above by fanning and rebounding off the lower barricades to attempt taking out the middle yellow tank, and immediately run so as to evade the green tanks’ missiles.  However, unlike the video above, don’t find yourself tucked into the lower left corner having to watch out for rounds travelling along the bottom of the screen, partially obscured by the bottom wall – that was unwise of me but I got lucky. 🙂  Then, just try to track down all the yellow tanks, and when you’re left with just the teal ones, simply use what you’ve learned about them to take them out.

Mission 12, mission 12.  The level that starts off with the rapid-firing red tank in an open space with you, and the level that introduces the deadly green tank that rapid-fires rocket-propelled shells – and that rebound twice.  As with most levels that seem deadly at first, they become relatively straightforward when the right tactic & strategy are applied.

As with before, when you come face to face with a red tank, an offensive tactic is often effective.  Here, start off by seeking the red tank directly and immediately fanning out all five rounds, leading and lagging the red tank at the same time.  Since the red tank doesn’t try very hard to evade your shots when a direct line of sight is available, this will usually take it out.

Next I usually proceed to the upper right end of the barricades to tackle the green tank near the upper right corner.  At this position, that green tank will usually try to hit you with the first rebound by aiming at the upper wall.  Therefore, if you also try to do the same to it via fan-and-rebound, you will be able to cancel out all its attacks, and in the process take it out too.

Then I usually just sit there and wait for the remaining red tank to approach and take that out the same way.

Finally, we’re left with the last remaining green tank.  Here you would employ tactic #5 in General Strategy against Green Tanks.  Fortunately, the geometry of the arrangement is such that you will be pretty safe as long as you are on the northwestern side of the battlefield.  Therefore you can wait for a good opportunity to sneak into a line of sight with the green tank and fire directly (oh yeah, and run!).  The opportunity is when it is about to fire its next shell, as that is when its previous shells have already traveled some distance on the screen, allowing you to see their trajectories clearly, and when its next shell will take a short while to reach you due to the distance.  Yes, they are rapid firers when compared to other rocket-propelled-shell-firing tanks, but not to ordinary ones. 🙂

Notice that the potholes didn’t play a role in this strategy.  Also, you are able to take the tanks out one at a time, due to the geometry that constrains the effectiveness of the two-rebound shells, and to the fact that when an enemy tank seeks you out in this game, they almost always do so by direct approach, i.e. they rarely take a longer path in order to sneak up behind you, i.e. go around the “far” end (relative to you) of the diagonal barricades.
